NCR Solution Delivers Strong Return on Investment by Improving Processes
and Automating Manual Operations

BEIJING, China – NCR Corporation (NYSE:NCR) today announced the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) has become the first commercial bank in China to deploy NCR’s iTRAN™ ImageTrac ®III high-speed multi-form document imaging transports and precognition software.  Initially, this solution is providing PBOC with the ability to reduce the cost, speed and related financial risks of processing cheques.

PBOC has deployed this solution into the Shanghai Automatic Clearing Centre to support inward item processing services for a number of branches for Pudong Development Bank in Shanghai.  PBOC also plans to extend these services to a total of 24 sub-branches and 111 outlets of Pudong Development Bank in Shanghai by the first half of this year.

The NCR iTRAN ImageTrac III document imaging solution is capable of capturing, identifying and sorting documents of various size, weight and composition in one pass at a high speed.  This transport, coupled with NCR customized software, delivers a solution that provides intelligent document recognition with the capacity to perform such in-line functions as document identification, automatic recognition, categorization and verification for subsequent outsorting or exception handling.

The PBOC Shanghai Automatic Clearing Centre will centralize all inward items, including cheques and envelopes in accordance with Pudong Development Bank’s requests to conduct categorization, scanning and automatic identification.  The Centre will also carry out financial verification for the related cheques in envelopes and then generate a set of electronic data which is returned to Pudong Development Bank for further processing.

“NCR's iTRAN ImageTrac has significantly reduced the amount of time and cost we spend on scanning and sorting items.  It can easily complete a task in less than an hour which could have cost commercial banks a lot of labour and time in the past. The built-in intelligence offered through NCR’s software enables us to predetermine the specific data we wish to capture on these items so that human errors and fraud are dramatically reduced.  This also reduces our risk, while improving customer satisfaction,” said Mr Wu Keyi, supervisor of the PBOC Shanghai Automatic Clearing Centre.

Mr. Keyi added, “By outsourcing cheque processing needs to a central professional cheque processing centre, commercial banks will be able to lower their costs and also reduce the risk of distributed processing.  Beyond cheque image processing, we also plan to serve the banks’ back-end business processing or even insurance and securities businesses.  The business outlook is promising.”

“We are excited to support PBOC Shanghai Automatic Clearing Centre in successfully deploying the NCR multi-form document scanning and data recognition solution,” said Jolene Wong, general manager for NCR Payment & Imaging Solutions in Greater China. “As paper continues to become costlier and less efficient to handle and store, digital capture has experienced steady growth.  NCR’s breadth of experience provides expanded scanning capabilities to the banking and financial industry, as well as other industries such as insurance, securities and healthcare which also need high volume document processing capabilities.”
